As many of you know, the hard and fast claim filing deadline in which to file a claim against Pacific Gas and Electric for losses from the Camp Fire (or other fires and losses that happened prior to the date PG&E filed for bankruptcy) was October 21, 2019.
My office spent numerous days and weekends working to make sure all of our clients claims were properly and timely filed.
Thousands (or more) of people who had the right to file a claim against PG&E simply did not timely file a claim before October 21, 2019. For some, the trauma of the fire and the after-math were too much and the thought of dealing with the claims process simply too overwhelming. For others, they listened to the persistent rumor-mill circulating in Facebook Groups or around town that said things like “You will not get any money” or “You cannot file a claim if you had insurance”; and for some people they are just procrastinators and simply did not get around to filing a claim on time.
I had some rumblings that more time might be given when I was talking to a claims adjuster with PG&E after 10-21-19, who told me that they would accept claims until Friday 10-25-19, although this had never been publicized.
At this time, PG&E has agreed to extend the claims filing deadline until sometime in December of 2019 (nothing is official at this time). Judge Montale, who is overseeing the bankruptcy case, has not signed off on this yet ( a hearing is pending for next week). At this time we are hopeful that the Judge will indeed approve an extension in which to file claims.
At this time my office will continue to sign up new cases and file claims, working on the assumption that fire victims now have more time.
I am one of the few local offices doing these cases. You can make a claim whether you had insurance or not. If you have any questions please contact me at 530-893-9900.
We view this as a very good and consumer oriented development. Too many victims did not file and now they have a second chance.
